In May of 2017, we were lucky enough to get ocean side spots at South Carlsbad State Beach two weeks in a row. Xaria loves beach camping, but then who doesn't love being at the seaside!
The torrential rains of the Winter of 2016 set the scene for one of the most spectacular wildflowers blooms California has seen in many a year. As we rolled into Spring 2017, the deserts and hillsides burst into vibrant color, and we were lucky enough to be able to see some of the best areas.
Great fun was had by all at the 2017 Lake Perris Teardrop Gathering. Just under one hundred teardrop campers turned up and we were greeted with thousands of acres of yellow flowers surround the lake.
We love Joshua Tree National Park. For this trip, we planned to split time between the Indian Cove Campground and an Airbnb located in Wonder Valley, near Twentynine Palms. However, it was so cold that we decided to extend our stay in the Airbnb and just use our reserved campsite during the day.
South Carlsbad State Beach campground offers 220 campsites, approximately half of which are oceanside; offering a fantastic vista. Access to the beach is mainly via stairs down the cliffs, but there is one ramp at the south end of the facility. During the summer months, the campground is full every weekend and most weekdays.
This would be our only trip to the Pasa Picacho campground in 2016 unless we went last minute on a whim. The weather report looked good. Mark (a good friend of mine) and his two sons, Alex and August, were planning to join us.
San Clemente State Beach campground sits high on the bluff, back some distance from the ocean. From the majority of the camping spots, including ours, you cannot see the sea, but you can smell the salt in the air. The campground is not that pretty, functional would be the more appropriate description.
We had great fun attending the 2016 Lake Perris Teardrop Gathering. This year about one hundred and twenty little teardrops of all vintages and styles turned up. It was thrilling to see so many teardrop campers gathered in one place.
For our first outing of 2016, we headed to Tamarisk Grove campground in February. My campground of choice was already sold out (note to self - book earlier), but fortunately, there were still a few vacancies here. This campground is one of four developed campgrounds in Anza-Borrego State Desert Park, with 27 sites offering shade and a shower/toilet block.
With a certain degree of trepidation, we checked in at the British Airways desk for Xaria's first flight. We were going to visit my parents, my brother's family, and the rest of the Hawkins clan. Although the flight was direct, it would take a little over 10 hours!
